An investigation, celebration, repudiation and embrace of every shade of emotion that transpires in the body of “She” over a period of 28 days, or one menstrual cycle, “She’s too much” draws inspiration from two books juli baker and summer picked up last year: bell hooks’ “All About Love” and Tara Costello’s “Red Moon Gang”, which have both helped her embrace the gamut of emotions she experiences over the 28 days of her monthly cycle that can be triggered by small events in her day to day life– her favorite restaurant discontinuing a favorite dish– to structural issues – the current political situation, capitalism, patriarchy, tradition and other hegemonic value systems. Her connection to these two books inspired her to begin closely documenting, exploring and tracking her emotions in a journal, then reworking its contents into the 29 paintings arrayed alongside sculptures and other works of art in this exhibition.

Each of juli baker and summer’s paintings are grounded in her lived experiences: personal memories, everyday conversations, globetrotting, favorite books, pop culture, society and politics. In a way, her art-making is another form of journaling, on a larger canvas. Her paintings are distinguished by color palettes as vibrant and bold as the summer sun, and young women with strange– almost abstract– bodies sprawled at ease and awash with the emotions discharged through each brushstroke.

About Juli Baker and Summer:

Juli Baker and Summer was born and grew up in Bangkok, Thailand. A proactive artist with a strong focus of the bright palette of Thai culture, Juli Baker and summer further her studies in fashion School, and travelled the world upon her graduation. Juli Baker and Summer also expresses her gender equality issues and social events through her art work. Juli facilities her creative process with a lead-in with her mind, as she explores inwardly for message, philosophy and beliefs she aims to express through her art, namely her drawings of women reflect on her own existence in the patriarchal society, one she continues to find footing with other women validating their footing in the male-dominating world.

I had the opportunity to visit this exhibition back in Thailand. I knew Julibaker before this exhibition. I discovered her by buying a tote bag designed by her. I have been a fan of her art ever since. I really like Julibaker for her colorful and doodle art styles. This exhibition was a very different experience. She recorded her feelings over one menstrual cycle and journaled it down as a painting. As a girl, I relate to this exhibition a lot. Even though we are different people and we feel and face different things, we all share common things. Sometimes I really feel like perhaps I am too much. Too happy, too sad, too insecure, too lonely, too masculine, too confident. We all feel overwhelmed by these emotions. Going to this exhibition taught me that it's okay to feel this way and that you are not alone. I remember that the exhibition was quite lively because of all her colorful paintings. My favorite painting is The Bed-ins For Peach. It was a very big painting with a colorful pastel color pallet with a girl sleeping in a patterned duvet. There were sculptures as well as a short video room to watch when you were feeling too much. Her works really inspires me to paint, which I rarely do. In the future, I would like to paint freely according to my feelings like what Juli Baker did. All in all, I really enjoyed this exhibition and will continue to support and follow her works. Her
