2/10/2023 Product Design Day1 Reflection

How did you feel working with so many restraints (given objects, limited materials, limited time)? Did this make you more/less creative?

Working with so many restraints made me more creative. At first, I felt less creative because of how limited materials and time we were given. However, I did not think much about it and just played around with my given materials and realized that I was being more creative. If I were to choose my own material, I would go with my comfort materials that I know how to use properly, but nothing new or exciting would happen. This time, I got to try new materials like wires, tomatoes, and lemons, which really opened the door of creativity for me. I felt like my ideas were just flowing and it was not limited like when I work with my comfort materials since these are new materials to me and I can test and explore them as much as I want.

Did this help you generate ideas? Why?

Using new materials definitely helped me generate more ideas. During the paper workshop, I was very stuck at first because we were only given an a4 paper to work with. But because of how limited it was, I came up with so many ideas of how I could use the paper to elevate, display, protect, or play around with a single cherry tomato. I think that limited materials and time could be very useful because you will be focusing on one thing at a time and your ideas flow more.

Was this product design task what you expected? Which aspect of the task did you enjoy most/least? Why?

I kind of expected it to be like it was because I had a friend who did the workshop before me. I expect that we would probably going to be making some type of product but I would not have guessed that it would be with fruits. I enjoyed sketching my ideas the most. I felt under pressure but at the same time, it was very fun and challenging. I did not overthink and just went with whatever popped into my head, usually if I did not have the timer on I would have not sketched everything out. I honestly enjoyed all the aspects of product design including the making so I do not have my least favorite.

Which part did you enjoy most?

I would say my favorite part is ideation. I don't think it was easy, but it was fun and challenging. I gathered a lot of ideas without worrying about it too much. By doing it this way, some ideas came out as unrealistic but some ideas came out as awesome and sometimes I combined the ideas together.

Which designers in the lecture did you enjoy most? What did you find interesting about their work?

I enjoyed Hang It All (1953) by Charles & Ray Eames the most. I think it is because of the colorful circles that made the piece interesting to me. I like that the circles come in different colors not just one and how the circles are quite big, which makes it more playful and bold.

Make an action plan- what work still needs doing? Do you need to print research or studio work?

I printed my day1 work already but I still need to print my day2 work and stick it into my sketchbook. I need to do research on 5 contemporary designers on product design.
